EichiWataru is an idol with great expressive ability. He never ceases to amaze me, and I never get tired of being with him. Well, sometimes he appears out of nowhere, then the next minute he's gone. Fufu, he is free-spirited in every sense of the word, and a dear companion of mine. As a member of fine, I'd love to stand on the stage with him as long as possible.[1]
Ensemble Stars! Introduction
Fickle and elusive, Wataru lives in his own peculiar world and is one of the Three Eccentrics. His speech and actions are theatrical at all times, and the Theater Club members are victims of his erratic behavior. Because he often wears a mask, the members call him "Masked Freak."
Even though he's eccentric, his talent for singing and acting are undoubted, so a lot of fans gather at his plays and live shows. He is a member of fine, the academy's most formidable unit.[2]
Appearance[]
Wataru is a very tall young man with light purple eyes. He has pale blue hair that reaches past his back and fades into a slightly more vivid blue at the tips. A few strands on the left side of his hair are braided and held in place with a maroon band. He also ties some of his hair up into a small bun at the back of his head.
On stage, Wataru wears fine's uniform, which includes a three-piece suit with a white ruffled cravat that is tinged pale gold at the bottom. His tailcoat is mainly white in color, although it is lined with pale blue fabric, and is decorated with golden embellishments on the lapels and collar. The jacket’s cufflinks and pocket linings are golden, and the white shirt tucked underneath that has scalloped edges that are visible at the jacket’s cuffs. His waistcoat is the same pale blue as his tailcoat lining. His pants are white with golden embellishments on the waist and golden-lined pockets. He wears short white gloves and his shoes are white with gold accents and soles.
On warmer days, his casual outfit consists of a short-sleeved button-down shirt with red trousers. The shirt is covered in a floral print along the front of the shirt, brightening the shirt’s tan base color with green leaves and pink and red flowers. The ends of his sleeves are detailed with a thick black stripe with a thin red one directly above it. The left side of his collar also has a black and red stripe detail to match. He wears a black belt that has a few small gold studs. The black loafers he wears are also embellished with golden studs and small tassels.
On colder days, his casual outfit consists of a maroon-colored button-down shirt layered over a black turtleneck. The shirt’s chest pockets and buttons are black. These pieces are tucked into dark brown trousers worn with a black belt. Over this, Wataru wears a coat with several asymmetrical blocks of colors— including black, maroon, teal, and a vibrant orange. The buttons on the coat’s cuffs are this vibrant orange. A stripe on the top of the left pocket is also orange, while the right pocket is outlined in white. The coat has a smaller zipper pocket on the left side of the chest.
Ensemble Stars! Appearance

He wears the school uniform with the top button of his white shirt undone. Over this is a green tie and a brown and grey two-toned vest with black buttons. He wears the school's blazer off his shoulders and black and white dress shoes with black laces. Incidentally, Wataru's blazer is notably different from all of the other students', somewhat resembling a trench coat due to its longer length.
On stage, Wataru wears fine's uniform, which includes a white tuxedo shirt, a blue tie, and a dark blue vest with gold buttons. The uniform consists of a regal white jacket with gold ornamental shoulder pieces and decorations on the lapel. He also wears white suit pants and white dress shoes.
In the previous school year— Wataru's second year—, his hair was tied up into a ponytail unlike his current style that is let loose with a bun at the back. He had two braids— one was pulled into the ponytail with the rest of his hair, while the other remained down on his left side. In addition, his light blue hair faded into lavender rather than vivid blue at the time.
Personality[]
Wataru is a loud enigmatic young man who is well-known for his theatrical capabilities. More often than not he is performing some kind of trick or act, especially when around Eichi Tenshouin. He loves to tease his friends (much to Keito Hasumi's chagrin), but it's always done in a light-hearted nature.
Many of the people around him believe he lives in his own world, but it's actually the opposite that is true. Thanks to Wataru's well-known status as a performer, and as an eccentric personality, he is hyperaware of his surroundings and never lets his act up to ensure no one around him gets bored. The only time he is seen to drop his act is in Phantom Thieves VS Detectives when he opened up to Tomoya Mashiro about his past.
Wataru used to distance himself from others, and even had no interest in fine at the beginning of Ensemble Stars! despite being a member of the unit himself. He mentioned that he does not want to remember people's names so he calls most people by nicknames, including his unit-mates Tori Himemiya and Yuzuru Fushimi. Despite showing that he has remembered Eichi Tenshouin's and Keito Hasumi's names, he still frequently calls them by nicknames as well, usually in a playful or teasing manner (in Keito's case, at least). Later on Wataru claims that it is thanks to Eichi reaching out to him that he was able to become closer to others.
While he is known for trying to keep the mood light, and for keeping everyone entertained, he can become quite ruthless when training his juniors. But his extreme training has no malicious intent, as he usually sees things that others do not and wishes to hone his juniors' skills to the best of his capability so that they can have an easier time in the future. He also does his best to encourage his friends, such as Keito Hasumi and Shu Itsuki, to utilize their talents unsuitable for idol work in other fields, namely in theater.
Etymology[]
Wataru's full name, in the original Japanese order (Hibiki Wataru, 日々樹渉), is synonymous with a phrase that means "to echo, to reverberate" (hibiki wataru, 響き渡る). This phrase appears in fine's song Neo Sanctuary, as well as Wataru's solo song Amazing☆World.
The name Wataru means "ford, ferry, port" (渉). The kanji in Wataru's surname Hibiki mean "sun, day" (日) (hi) and "tree" (樹) (ki).

Wataru’s family consists of his adoptive parents and his pet doves. The exact circumstances of his upbringing are unknown. Wataru explains that he was found and taken in by an elderly couple as a baby, and that they raised him as their own.[3]
